VIJAYAWADA: Expressing concern over the spurt in migration of labour from AP to the neighbouring States, Leader of Opposition and YSRC chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged that as a result of the State government diluting the spirit of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) intended to provide handful work to labour, the workers are being forced to go out of the State in search of work.

During the Question Hour in the AP Legislative Assembly on Saturday, the YSRC chief took strong exception to Panchayat Raj Minister Ch Ayyannapatrudu attributing the migration of labour to Karnataka and Kerala for getting high wages.

Even as the minister asserting that the State stood top in effective implementation of NREGA in the country and making proper utilisation of funds and even got several awards from the Centre, the Opposition leader fumed at the TDP government diverting the funds for laying of CC roads and construction of Anganwadi and Panchayat Raj buildings and development of burial grounds instead of providing work to the needy.

Taking strong exception to the reply from the minister that the government is paying Rs 194 to a worker per day and the workers migrating to other States for getting high wages, the YSRC chief said that there are instances where the migrant labourers from Andhra Pradesh eking out livelihood by begging on the streets of Kerala.

Resenting the government’s reply to the NREGA, the Opposition party staged a walk out from the House.

BC students fee reimbursement rocks the House

With Speaker Kodela Siva Prasad Rao not giving a chance to YSRC chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to speak over the BC students fee reimbursement issue, the YSRC MLAs stormed into the well.

Raising slogans against the Chief Minister, the YSRC members remained in the well nearly for half-an-hour. However, the Speaker continued Question Hour amid sloganeering of the Opposition MLAs.

The objection of the YSRC was that the government was paying only Rs 35,000 per year to Engineering students even as the fee structure of some of the colleges is around Rs one lakh per year and wanted the government to enhance the fee reimbursement accordingly.

When the MLAs sought the Speaker to give a chance to their leader, the Speaker said that though the question is not raised by YSRC, he gave an opportunity to the YSRC member and added that it is not correct on part of the Leader of Opposition to intervene in every question.

Resenting the same, the Opposition staged a walk out from the House
