Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu condemned the attack on YSR Congress Party president Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy at the Visakhapatnam airport on Thursday.
Stating that the government would not tolerate any such attacks, Mr. Naidu asserted that the government had nothing to do with the attack.
“At the same time, the government will not keep quiet if anyone tries to create law and order problem taking shelter under the incident,” he warned.
Condemning the attack, Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N. Chinarajappa said the police were inquiring into the incident.
“All details pertaining to the incident will be revealed once the investigation is completed. Being a worker in the airport canteen, the accused, Srinivasa Rao, carried a pass. But it has to be established how he has carried a knife into the airport,” he said.
“The accused hails from Mummadivaram village in East Godavari district. He approached Mr. Jagan with a request for a selfie. Public representatives, including myself, should be careful while honoring such requests. The security personnel should also be vigilant,” Mr. Chinarajappa added.
IT Minister N. Lokesh tweeted, “Strongly condemn the attack on Opposition Leader @ ysjagan garu that happened at Vizag airport. Such cowardly attacks have no place in modern society.”
Director General of Police R.P. Thakur said preliminary inquiry revealed that Srinivasa Rao attacked the Leader of the Opposition for publicity.
“He claims to be a fan of Mr. Jagan. The CISF personnel has recovered a 10-page letter and the knife from his possession. The police are enquiring with the CISF as to how the accused managed to carry the knife into the airport. If required, the police would provide additional security to Mr. Jagan,” the DGP said, adding, “The CISF has to take up total responsibility as the incident happened on the airport premises.”
