DRI seizes 528 brown packets in Vizag

Based on specific intelligence that prohibited narcotic drugs were being illegally transported, officers from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Visakhapatnam launched an operation and intercepted a Tata goods vehicle bearing registration number AP 05 TC 3601 near Payakaraopeta ‘Y’ junction on NH -16, in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. After searching the vehicle, the officers found 48 bags concealed under seven tonnes of casuarina wood logs. On opening the bags, as many as 528 brown packets weighing a total of 1,113 kg of cannabis were found.

The contraband was procured from the Visakha agency area and was headed to Zaheerabad in Telangana. The substance was seized under the provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The value of the seized ganja in the grey market would be around Rs 1.67 crore. The officers also seized the vehicle valued at Rs 6.7 lakh along with the casuarina wood logs, which has been used for concealment and transport of the contraband.
